What We Know Concerning the Fatalities of the Bondi Terror Attack

A minimum of 16 individuals perished and more than 40 sustained injuries when assailants opened fire at a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local police have labeled a terrorist attack.

According to the most recent information, authorities have stated the number of fatalities stands at 16, including one of the suspected attackers. Furthermore, 42 injured people were transported to medical facilities.

The victims have not yet been formally identified, but police believe their ages range between 10 and 87 years old.

Below are the victims who have been named so far.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Known as a father of five children, he served as the associate rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Family members and acquaintances described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a family member asked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.

She recounted the moments leading up to the shooting, stating they were standing when the shooting started. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she stated.

The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had later relocated to Australia from Eastern Europe.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Publicly, the Foreign Minister declared that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a new, tragic manifestation of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the message continued.

One Child

A child who was taken to the Sydney Children’s Hospital is among those who had died, police have confirmed.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was a fatality in the incident, according to reports citing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospital, many remain under care, with several in a critical state. Those hurt comprise two officers who responded to the attack.

A casualty is a bystander who attempted to intervene to tackle one of the attackers. Called a local hero, he received bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Reports indicate he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.

He wrote, he described the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the actions of those who rushed to help. He stated he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the attack. He told reporters he heard “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I’ve been shot myself. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
