Canada’s food inspection agency has announced it intends to start a “complete depopulation” of hundreds of these large birds at a ranch following the country’s top court refused to block the contentious slaughter.

Judicial Obstacles Cleared by Supreme Court Decision

Thursday’s ruling eliminated any legal impediment to starting the killings.

Universal Ostrich Farms, located near the community of Edgewood, British Columbia, was initially directed in the month of May to cull almost four hundred birds, due to concerns of an spread of H5N1 avian flu.

Earlier this week, authorities took over of the business.

Sixty-nine ostriches have already died after the emergence of a flu-like illness.

Midweek, the nation’s top court issued an temporary halt on the eradication directive as it considered whether to take up the matter.

Governmental and Societal Responses

The increasing controversy over the birds – and a lingering distrust of government – have inspired demonstrators to gather at the property, with many broadcasting their anger on social media.

The situation has also entered Canada’s federal politics.

Earlier this fall, the opposition leader, Pierre Poilievre, was questioned repeatedly by reporters whether he supported the demonstrators.

The Conservative figure has avoided making direct statements on the issue, even though many within his political group protesting against the slaughter.

He informed reporters the situation had been “mismanaged from the very beginning” but didn’t say the word “ostrich”.

Cross-Border Interest and Offers

A number of high-profile individuals from the United States have petitioned Canadian officials.

The American health chief proposed to relocate the birds to his ranch in the Sunshine State.

An US billionaire has also pleaded with the Canadian government to rescind its cull order.

Scientific and Moral Debates

The Canadian federal government stated the relevant agency was following a “stamping out” approach in order to limit the spread of bird flu, a move in line with wider guidance from international health bodies.

However, animal rights organizations have called on the agency to perform additional tests on the birds to confirm they are carrying the virus.

The ranch operators said that because the last bird flu death happened on 15 January 2025, with the remaining birds appearing in good condition or healed, the group has developed at least some level of immunity against the virus.

They have also expressed skepticism on the extent and reliability of the tests on the birds.

Ranch Representative Reaction

Recently, the farm’s spokesperson, told the media that the authority was “murdering” birds in good health.

“They are prehistoric animals that have endured millions of years, but they won’t endure the Canadian Food Inspection Agency,” she said.

A co-owner said he was “afraid there’s – in my opinion – there’s no fairness left”.

Judicial and Authority Findings

A national court, however, found that permitting the ostriches to stay alive could lead to the spread of avian influenza to other animals, the livestock sector – or to humans.

The authority has not announced when it expects to begin slaughtering the birds.

Culling Procedures

A 2016 agency manual, obtained under freedom of information laws, states ostriches can be euthanized by different means, the recommended being lethal injection, which requires three people: one person to restrain the bird by sitting on its back, another to secure the head, and one to inject the drug.

Personnel can also use gas chambers or neck dislocation.

Employees of the agency can only use firearms on the ostriches in extreme circumstances, if they have a “skilled marksman” on the premises.
