A Pair of Cuba-Headed Aid Ships Listed Lost following Leaving Mexican Waters.
A comprehensive search and rescue operation is actively ongoing in the Caribbean Sea for two lost boats loaded with relief goods en route from the Mexican coast to Cuba.
Maritime Rescue Missions Deployed
Mexico has sent naval teams and search planes to locate the missing boats, which were had on board at least nine crew members, per a military release.
The ships had been projected to make landfall in the Cuban capital on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been no communication from them and zero verification of their safe arrival, authorities reported.
The Situation of Aid to the Nation
The Caribbean nation has relied heavily on humanitarian shipments from Mexico over the last several weeks, as the country struggles through repeated power outages across the country.
"The skippers and their teams are seasoned mariners, and each boat are fitted with suitable safety systems and emergency beacons," an official associated with the mission commented.
The nine crew members are from the United States, Cuba, France, and Poland. Mexican authorities said it has established contact with rescue coordination centers from each country along with their consular staff.
"Our team is co-operating fully with the relevant authorities and remain confident in the crews' ability to make it to Cuba without incident," the official further stated.
Earlier Aid Mission
Just days before, the Cuban government widely celebrated and greeted with fanfare another boat that had transported a significant amount of humanitarian aid to the nation.
That boat, dubbed "a modern Granma" following the name of the yacht in which Castro came back to Cuba to start the armed struggle in the mid-20th century, carried solar panels, pharmaceuticals, infant formula, bicycles and foodstuffs.
Wider Geopolitical Climate
Charity groups and individuals have been at the forefront of efforts to ship essential supplies to Cuba starting at the turn of the year, a period which saw a energy blockade on the island nation was initiated.
Global bodies have since highlighted ""severe" shortages of supplies, with in excess of fifty thousand operations cancelled in Cuba due to energy rationing.
Diplomatic tensions have intensified lately, with remarks from various representatives highlighting the complex state of relations.
In response to previous statements, a senior Cuban official insisted that "the socialist system of Cuba is non-negotiable."
Accounts suggest that initial phases of discussions had begun, although their current progress remains not publicly known.
The naval forces said it was pledged to using all of the resources at its command to locate the sailboats and ensure the safety of the people on board.
To date, there has been silence on the missing boats by the government in Havana.
